What is the Flat Ring?
The Sparx Flat Grinding Ring is designed to help you remove the existing hollow in your skate blade, making it easier to set a new hollow. The ring’s specially formulated coarse abrasive allows for quick removal of skate blade damage, such as deep gauges and nicks. With a coarser abrasive compared to regular Radius or FIRE rings, the Flat Grinding Ring lets you remove more material in less time, while preserving the life of your Grinding Ring.
How to Use the Flat Ring
To Set a New Hollow:
- Use the Sparx Flat Grinding Ring for 3-4 cycles to remove the existing hollow and flatten your blade.
- Once the hollow is removed, insert a Radius Ring and sharpen for 6-8 cycles to ensure the new hollow is set. (For very deep hollows, 8-10 cycles are recommended).
To Remove Blade Damage:
- For small nicks: Use the Flat Grinding Ring for 5-6 cycles.
- For more severe or deeper damage: Start with 6-8 cycles on the Flat Grinding Ring, then continue with an additional 2-3 cycles until the damage is no longer visible.
- Once the damage is removed, insert a Radius or FIRE Ring and sharpen for 6-8 cycles to set the new hollow (8-10 cycles for very deep hollows).
Compared to Cross Grind Rings
The Sparx Flat Grinding Ring is not as coarse as our commercial Cross Grind rings. Cross Grind rings are only compatible with the PS commercial model Sparx Sharpeners. The Flat Ring serves as an excellent alternative for at-home users who need a similar grinding function.
