The grinding ring height needs to be adjusted because skate blades can vary in overall height (not just thickness). Some player steels are taller than average to allow for tighter turns without the skate boot contacting the ice. Modern goalie skate blades also tend to be taller than standard player steel. Because of this variation, Sparx allows the user to adjust the contact point where the grinding wheel meets the skate blade.
